From Using Solar to Sharing It: RPM Expands Solar to Its Neighbors

Founded in 1981, RPM Warehousing and Transportation is a public warehousing and transportation company that operates approximately 1.5 million square feet of food grade and general warehousing space along the East Coast.

Since 2017, RPM’s headquarters has been powered by renewable energy through a 480 kW DC solar PV system designed and installed by Solar Landscape. The installation reduced the company’s energy expenses and carbon footprint.

In 2021 RPM doubled down on its commitment to renewable energy by filling the rest of its roof with solar for the benefit of nearby residents. Through the New Jersey Community Solar program, RPM and Solar Landscape installed a community solar installation on RPM's remaining available roof space. Residents then subscribed to power their home with that renewable energy generated on RPM's roof, at a guaranteed discount.

Community solar supports local residents, helps RPM achieve its environmental and sustainability (ESG) goals, empowers them to be a good neighbor, and paves the way for a more sustainable future.

RPM’s community solar project generates nearly 3.2 megawatts of power that is distributed through the grid to households in surrounding towns. The project expands access to renewable energy to residents who could not “go solar” on their own homes for reasons like cost, renting their home, or a shady property. RPM’s second community solar site is a 1.1 MW project on another commercial building a few miles from its headquarters.

Commercial property owners who value solar energy can maximize their environmental stewardship and create access to clean energy for their community through community solar. RPM's community solar projects are supported by local organizations that educate residents about their benefits, including lower utility bills.

By removing barriers to solar, RPM has encouraged the local community to join them in the use of renewable energy and the collective fight against climate change.
